Inside the Real Mrs Doubtfire House Mrs. Doubtfire House Now

Just a 27-minute walk away via Steiner Street is one of the most photographed spots in all of San Francisco – the colorful Painted Ladies are a San Francisco icon. They are essentially a row of pretty Victorian houses with one of the most spectacular city backdrops. This area is, in fact, one of just 11 historic districts in the city of San Francisco and includes several bed and breakfasts. According to Zillow, the light-filled three-level residence boasts 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a landscaped patio area, and a large chef’s kitchen. In a sad but touching turn of events, when Robin Williams passed away in 2014, fans of his and no doubt the movie’s, left flowers and candles outside the home in tribute to his life.

Where is the Mrs Doubtfire House located?

In any event, the house is a gorgeous one, currently being enjoyed by an undisclosed buyer. All of these pictures make me want a historical house, or at least they make me want to throw the movie on, to appreciate and commemorate 25 years of the unforgettable Mrs. Doubtfire. In fact, it makes me wonder whether the house's windows used to have leaded glass like they do in the film, or whether that detail was thought up by the movie makers. In fact, the film kept most of the house's classic details, like the gorgeous inlaid detail on the pristine hardwood floors. And one of the most-booked tours in San Francisco is this Golden Gate Cruise, which gets you up close to the iconic bridge from the water!

The house inside is now almost unrecognizable, while the layout is the same, the entire interior has had a major facelift. The steps leading to the front door have had some brickwork done, the oval windowpanes have changed and the house has been painted a lighter color. The other noticeable change is the front door, the white door in the movie has been changed for a brown door. In 2016, a year after the arson attack, the house was sold by Douglas Ousterhout for $4.45 million. However, this did give us a chance to see how the property looked in more recent times, more than two decades since the movie was released. After Robin Williams committed suicide in 2014, the Mrs Doubtfire house became an impromptu memorial site for the star.

The Castro District

Although he knew quite a bit about the home’s role in the filming, when I asked what it was like to watch the movie from inside the house it takes place in, he offhandedly admitted he’d never watched it. Restraining my shocked bewilderment to this news, I asked instead if people seem to know about the house or often seek it out. He explained that the open-top tour buses stop outside nearly every hour, and he’s literally had to clean nose prints off his windows. (I later discovered dozens of pictures on Google images of people waving from his porch.) He installed wooden blinds to prevent an audience at dinner, but otherwise, he’s not bothered by the attention. After Robin Williams died in 2014, the “Doubtfire” house became an impromptu memorial spot for fans who left flowers and notes on the sidewalk.

You’ll also pass by other iconic sights, such as Alcatraz, Sausalito (one of the cutest towns near San Francisco), the Marin Headlands, and Angel Island State Park. What’s handy, too, is it’s an open ticket, meaning you can pick the departure time that best suits your schedule. The largest Japantown in the United States, it’s, in fact, one of only 3 remaining in the country. Known to locals as ‘Jtown,’ some of the best restaurants in the city can be found here, including Kui Shin Bo at 22 Peace Plaza and Udon Mugizo at 1581 Webster Street. It is worth noting that the interior scenes weren’t filmed in the house, as it was considered too small, so the interior scenes were shot in a movie studio.

Where is Mrs. Doubtfire’s house in real life?

It’s a popular area for tourists because of its views of the Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s also home to many restaurants, shops, and bars that are sure to please any palette. The Marina District is a waterfront neighborhood known for its chic shops, restaurants and cafés, and bayfront parks.

Calling himself Mrs Doubtfire, Daniel Hillard manages to fool his soon-to-be ex-wife and children into thinking he is just an old female nanny from Scotland.

Like so many movies then and now, scenes for Mrs. Doubtfire weren’t actually shot inside the house. In a desperate bid to spend more time with them, the out-of-work actor and his crafty brother Frank (Harvey Fierstein) hatch a plan. They disguise Daniel as a female housekeeper and get him an interview to be the children’s after-school nanny. The home is spread across three levels and features ornate and original details such as wooden floors, lead glass windows, and millwork moldings.

The 3,300 square foot home went on sale in April 2000 and was sold for $1.395 million. After the star of the movie, Robin Williams died suddenly in 2014, the home became crowded with adoring fans who wanted to leave flowers and notes for the deceased actor. If you haven’t seen the movie (first of all, why not?!) it follows Daniel Hillard, who has recently gone through a divorce with his wife Miranda. Daniel decides it would be a good idea to dress up as a housekeeper/nanny so that he is able to still see his children whilst undercover.

The inside of the home has a much more modern taste, rather than traditional feel you see in the movie, although the structure and layout have remained intact. The tiled island now long gone, a newly designed and fitted kitchen has taken its place. In the movie, there were two doors in the far right corner of the room, one of which has now gone. An almost identical shot from the living room into the dining room, one from 2016, the other from the movie.

Haight Ashbury is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in San Francisco, with a Walk Score of 97. The Cow Hollow neighborhood of San Francisco is a lovely historical area with a mix of old Victorians, stately mansions, and modern apartment buildings. The streets are lined with trees, and there are plenty of parks and green spaces to enjoy, including the Presidio just a few blocks away. The neighborhood is also home to various shops, restaurants, and cafés, all of which you can easily walk to as the neighborhood has a Walk Score of 94.

According to Variety, Mrs. Doubtfire's home is located at 2640 Steiner St. in the San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood. Teen Vogue says that this stunning two-story home has four bedrooms, a marble fireplace to burn wood, and a kitchen with white cabinets and dark gray marble slabs. Not only that, but the home has antique doorknobs to go with the Victorian-era design of its time. A brick pathway is present for garden lovers and leads to a small patio area with a garden and stone border.

The three-level Victorian house sits in a prime location on the corner of Broadway — an east-west street in San Francisco that runs from The Embarcadero to the sought-after Pacific Heights neighborhood. Matthew Lawrence, who played Chris, was born on February 11th, 1980 making him only 13 years old during filming. The entire movie was filmed in San Fran itself, with scenes taking place in different areas located all around the city. For example, the TV studio in which the main character Daniel Hillard gets a job is located in the East Bay area. Doubtfire goes for dinner, where Daniel has to perform a quick ‘switch’ between characters. The restaurant is actually named Bridge Restaurant which is situated at 44 Church Street, Danville.
